primary sources. Using these web sites, you will read and analyze
several of the documents. After completing this stage, you will write
a short profile of the average Jamestown resident.

Jamestown: John Smith Voyage of Exploration - Using the General
History as a guide, Virtual Jamestown was able to reconstruct John
Smith's voyages. They have been reconstructed as an interactive Flash
map, and can be viewed by anyone with the Flash plug-in (Flash 4 or

Percy's "Trewe Relacyon": A Primary Source for the Jamestown
Settlement - George Percy's "Trewe Relacyon" is perhaps
the most important documentary source for three crucial years in the
very early history of the Jamestown settlement, England's first successful
and enduring colony in the New World. Beginning in 1609, the work
chronicles the deprivations and miseries that beset the colony under
the brief presidency of Percy himself, and his immediate successors,
concluding with Percy's arduous voyage home to England in 1612, after
five and a half years in America. The account focuses on a period
dismissed briskly on by Percy's great antagonist, Capt. John Smith,
in his better-known histories of the subject. Through this document,
printed below, we glimpse the grim foundation of the colony through
the eyes of one of the few other early participants to leave a firsthand
account.

Online Adventure - In 1606, some 105 adventurers set off from
England to try and establish the first permanent English colony in
the New World. They settled in what is now the state of Virginia and
called their colony first James Fort, and then James Towne, in honor
of James I, the King of England. The early years of the colony were
nearly a total disaster. Almost half of the settlers died due to poor
choices in settlement location, management of resources, and quarrels
